Time to Get Your Hog Back
Stephen Bly
Circa 1995

Me and this insurance salesman were sitting down at the coffee shop when Prairie Bob came in covered from hat to boot in oil and grease. We’ve got several guys named Bob around here so one gets called Prairie Bob and another is known as Forrest Bob and the third is Town Bob, more affectionately known as Key Bob.

“I ain’t got time to eat dinner,” Prairie Bob reported. “I bought that truck on Saturday and didn’t even make it home. I ain’t keepin’ that truck. Nossir, I’m going to town right now and get my hog back.” Prairie Bob banged his way out the door and the insurance man stared at me for a moment. “You mean that old boy traded some hogs for a truck?” he asked.

Well, I had to take a minute to explain that getting your hog back is just a cowboy expression for recovering something that belongs to you that has been taken from you. Usually it has a connotation of being stolen. I figured that Prairie Bob thought his hard-earned money had been purloined by some slick talking truck salesman.

Now, it seems to me all of us has something mighty valuable stolen from us. I don’t mean your pocketbook or your pickup or your favorite cow dog. According to the Bible, one of the devil’s purposes here on earth is to steal, kill, and destroy. And I want to tell you he’s mighty good at what he does. He’ll try to steal your honesty, your reputation, your success, your family’s affection, and your bank account. But most of all, he’s already stolen your relationship with God.

Paul exhorted folks, saying, “We implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20).

We know we ought to have a relationship with God. And if we don’t have it, we feel like something’s missing. That’s the empty feeling in your gut when you stand at the grave of a loved one and realize your turn’s coming.

Through Jesus Christ each one of us can have a personal relationship with God. It’s ours. Jesus bought it for us with His very life. It’s sort of like the devil stole it away from us. Maybe it’s about time for some of you to go and get your hog back.
